Book Review: Timebound by Rysa Walker

Timebound (The Chronos Files #1)
Author:  Rysa Walker
Publisher:  Skyscape, 366 pages
Publication Date:  January 1, 2014

From Goodreads:
When Kate Pierce-Keller’s grandmother gives her a strange blue medallion and speaks of time travel, sixteen-year-old Kate assumes the old woman is delusional. But it all becomes horrifyingly real when a murder in the past destroys the foundation of Kate’s present-day life. Suddenly, that medallion is the only thing protecting Kate from blinking out of existence.

Kate learns that the 1893 killing is part of something much more sinister, and Kate’s genetic ability to time-travel makes her the only one who can stop him. Risking everything, she travels to the Chicago World’s Fair to try to prevent the killing and the chain of events that follows.

Changing the timeline comes with a personal cost, however—if Kate succeeds, the boy she loves will have no memory of her existence. And regardless of her motives, does she have the right to manipulate the fate of the entire world?

Review:
I loved this book...time travel done right.  I loved the discussion and attention given to what is right and wrong with the power to time travel.  What should you change? What are the ripple effects of even small changes?  There's two guys, but not in the traditional sense.  One of them (Kiernan) has feelings for her but Kate doesn't even know him because somewhere along the way, the timeline changed and so they never met (and there's an explanation for why he remembers and she doesn't).  And then Kate has to go back in time to undo something horrible that happened at the Chicago World's Fair and if she succeeds the other guy (Trey) won't remember her at all.  Even though her relationship with Trey was fast (a little insta-love here) and he went along with all of the time travel stuff too easily, I didn't mind it and I actually ended up feeling heartbroken at the possibility that he wouldn't remember (and I loved the way that played out, by the way).  The author did a great job incorporating the history of the World Fair and true events that happened.  And the villains in the novel are fascinating along with the changes they made in the past that have such huge ramifications in the present.  Amazing...I can't wait for the next book in this series.  I definitely recommend this one.

  3. I didn't request this one because I just didn't know how it would turn out. Now that I've read your review I'll definitely be reading it!!! I hate it when nothing is explained in a novel and no reasons are given as to why certain things happen or are one way forcing the reader to blindly accept everything. It sounds like this one didn't do that, so already that is a plus on my list. Thanks!
