Book Review: Eve & Adam by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate

Eve & Adam
Authors:  Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate
Publisher:  Felwel & Friends, 291 pages
Publication Date:  October 2, 2012

From Goodreads:
In the beginning, there was an apple—

And then there was a car crash, a horrible injury, and a hospital. But before Evening Spiker’s head clears a strange boy named Solo is rushing her to her mother’s research facility. There, under the best care available, Eve is left alone to heal.

Just when Eve thinks she will die—not from her injuries, but from boredom—her mother gives her a special project: Create the perfect boy.

Using an amazingly detailed simulation, Eve starts building a boy from the ground up. Eve is creating Adam. And he will be just perfect... won’t he?

Review:
This is a fast-paced and entertaining read.  The book starts with Eve getting into an accident that severs her leg.  Her mother is some big-wig scientist and takes her back to her company to heal.  Eve and her mother don't really get along (Eve's dad died a long time ago and he was the one she was close to).  Eve is best friends with Aislin and her mom does not approve of her at all ("Aislin is a drunken slut," according to her mom).  Aislin is completely different from Eve, but Eve loves her.  When it comes to guys, Eve is really picky, but then she meets Solo, who works for her mom.  Because Eve is bored, her mom gives her a a job to do:  creating a person using a DNA simulation software program.  Eve decides to create a guy, who is called Adam.  There are a lot of decisions she has to make, including how he looks (every single detail), how smart he is, whether he will be caring, courageous, etc.  It definitely makes you think about what characteristics are important and what you would choose if you had that choice.

The story is told mainly from the POV of Eve and Solo.  Solo lives at the research facility and has for many years.  He's figuring out a lot of the secrets of the company and getting to know Eve at the same time.  There's some romance, but just a hint.  A lot of twists and turns.  There's a side story with Aislin and her boyfriend that was pretty pointless.  My main complaint is that it just felt rushed towards the end.  Just when things were getting really interesting (involving Adam), it just sort of wrapped up and ended.  More could have been done with that.  In the end, fun, quick, sci-fi book.

  1. I remember being so excited for this when I first heard about it but my excitement waned after awhile and I forgot about it. I like sidestories, but not when they are there for no reason. I love the concept of creation in this one.

  2. I don't really know anyone who has even read this book. This was a good one. I kinda wished it was a series.

    1. I definitely think it had a lot of potential, and it ended before much is done with Adam. I guess I could have put this one on the Top Ten Tuesday this week! ~Pam
