Discussion Question: Reading on Long Trips?

I recently went on an overseas trip and rather than dreading the 11 hour flight, followed by the 6 hour layover, followed by another 3 hour flight I was ECSTATIC because I knew I would be reading, reading, reading.

In order to prepare for my trip I thought long and hard about what kinds of books to bring to read on the plane and in what format.  I brought one paperback I knew I could and would leave at the airport after I was done reading it, one hardback book that would require more concentration, my e-reader stocked with at least 6 choices from three different genres, and finally three new audiobooks to listen to on my ipod.  Over the whole trip I read three books on my e-reader, one paperback, one hardback, and one audiobook. I enjoyed every single one.

What do you do when you prepare for a trip?  Do you buy new books just for the trip, force yourself to read some of the things on your shelves, or do you chance it and buy a book at the airport before you board the plane?

  1. I pack lots of books whenever I'm going on a long trip. Airplane rides are my favorite because of all the reading I get done. I also have my Kindle all loaded up and ready to go for trips as well. I'm not a big audiobook person, but I did just get one from Edelweiss that I'm saving for my next trip to listen to on the plane. Is it bad that whenever I go on vacation or trips, I may be more excited about the plane ride (because of the reading) than the actual trip? Lol. Glad you enjoyed all the books you brought!

  2. I think the opportunity to read is why I really don't mind an inconvenient layover! ~Sheri

  3. It's awesome you were actually productive! I always plan to read a TON when I am going on long trips but almost end up reading next to none because I am enjoying the change of scenery too much. Can't wait to read some of your reviews!

  4. It would be a great excuse to buy more books, haha. I don't have many long trips, but I always make sure that I have enough books with me! That's one of the reasons I love my e-reader so much :D

  5. ahhh this is me! I travel a fair bit and now I don't mind long flights or airport time because it's reading time!! The length of the trip typically dictates what I bring. If it's a short trip and I have the space I will typically read physical books with no impact to my reading schedule. But for longer trips I bring my kindle and usually read books that I've been meaning to read for a while. I always have audiobooks on hand, so those come with me whenever. :) And as always, I bring WAY MORE books than I think I will read JUST IN CASE. :)

  6. I usually just read whatever I'm planning on reading next anyway, so library books I have out and books I own. I also get excited about long flights any layovers! I know a lot of people don't like airports, but they sell books and food, which are really all it takes to make me happy :)
