From Goodreads:
A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

Review:
I enjoyed this book.  It's a fun, fast-paced adventure with Alexa/Alex masquerading as a boy, assigned to protect the prince. Her family is killed when she's fourteen and she pretends to be a boy because all orphan girls are forced to become breeders in order to increase the population of fighters for the king's army.

Alexa is quite the badass, she's actually the best fighter in the prince's guard.  Her brother has helped her the last three years in keeping her true identity a secret (what a great brother, he's always looking out for her).  I enjoyed the political intrigue, action scenes, and the magic.  I also loved the unfolding story of Damian, the lazy spoiled prince who is keeping secrets and who is definitely not what he appears to be.

However, the romance was a bit lacking.  I didn't really care that much for Rylan, and, in fact, his character seems a bit unnecessary.  I wish we could have seen more interactions between him and Alexa before we find out how he feels about her.  I also didn't completely buy Damian's feelings for Alexa, it seemed quite sudden given they didn't seem like they really knew each other. A slow-building relationship would have been much more believable.  And Alexa becomes so girly at certain points, constantly obsessing over Damian and Rylan that I felt like shaking her and telling her to get a grip.

In the end, an entertaining, action-packed fantasy with a tough heroine.  And the ending...quite surprising, especially what happens to Alexa.  Gutsy move on the part of the author, I'm interested to see what happens next.

  1. I have an ARC for this one and am intrigued by it. Sounds like a Mulan type storyline and I like that. I prefer slow building romance as well, think it works better.

    1. The main relationships were in place to a certain extent before the book begins, so we just don't see it, but the one definitely seemed sudden to me. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. ~Pam

  2. I'm reading it right now and I really like it. I'm to the part where she is taken the letter to the jungle (not sure how far in that is?) Alexa reminds me of Arya Stark from Game of Thrones and the book reminds me of Rae Carson & Sarah J. Maas - which are two of my favorite series.

Thanks for a spoiler free review :)

    1. I do love a good fantasy. I thought it was ok to discuss the two love interests since they were included in the blurb. Glad you're enjoying it so far! You'll have to let me know what you thought about the ending. ~Pam

  3. Too bad about the romance, but everything else sounds awesome :) I love a strong heroine and the whole girl pretending to be a boy concept.

    1. I love plots where the girl pretends to be a boy too, but I always wonder what she looks like to be fooling people but then also have guys falling for her. :) ~Pam

  4. I have this one on my Kindle waiting to be read! I'm pretty excited for it. Bummer about the romance though. But it sounds like the plot is really interesting and will make up for it. The whole girl pretending to be a boy thing reminds me of The Burning Sky which I loved. Hopefully I like this one! :)

  5. Haha my thought progression while reading your review...
Paragraph 1: "Tell me more, this sounds promising"
Paragraph 2: "OMG this book has me written all over it"
Paragraph 3: "Dammit Alexa is going to drive me crazy, is it worth it?"
Paragraph 4: "With that kind of ending? Yes."

So I think I will have to read this one! Let's hope I can tolerate the romance aspect!

    1. Yeah, everything except the romance (and Alexa turning into such a girl) worked. Hope you enjoy it! ~Pam

  6. I like that this heroine is actually badass! But I do NOT like love triangles as you know, and one featuring an unnecessary guy makes me want to skip this altogether. I will hold off and see how the next one is before starting. But glad you enjoyed!

    1. It was just so unnecessary to the story, it would have been so much better without it. ~Pam
