Book Review: Angel Burn by L.A. Weatherly

Angel Burn (Angel #1)
Author:  L.A. Weatherly
Publisher:  Candlewick, 449 pages
Publication Date:  May 24, 2011

From Goodreads:
Willow knows she's different from other girls, and not just because she loves tinkering with cars. Willow has a gift. She can look into the future and know people's dreams and hopes, their sorrows and regrets, just by touching them. she has no idea where this power comes from. But the assassin, Alex, does. Gorgeous, mysterious Alex knows more about Willow than Willow herself does. He knows that her powers link to dark and dangerous forces and that he's one of the few humans left who can fight them. When Alex finds himself falling in love with his sworn enemy, he discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all good and evil.

Review:
What a unique take on angels, I don't think I've read a book where angels are portrayed in this way.  Loved the world-building and the explanations for what and why the angels have done what they've done (sorry that's a big vague, but I don't want to spoil anything).  I also enjoyed watching Willow and Alex get to know each other.  In fact, most of the novel is about them on the run alone together, which is unusual.  Yay, road trip!  They are both strong characters.  Alex has been alone for a long time and never really had a childhood, instead being trained as an assassin. Willow hasn't had it easy either, growing up with her Mom being the way she is (again, sorry for being vague) and the fact that her gift of seeing into the future means the kids at her school think she's weird.  Even though Willow is Alex's sworn enemy, he slowly finds out that things are not as black and white as he has always believed.  People are chasing them, Willow's been targeted, and they're the only ones who can save the world.  So, no pressure.  The entire trilogy is out and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next two books.

  2. I haven't read a lot of angel books. In fact, I think the only series I've read is Lauren Kate's Fallen books, which were okay, but definitely not my favorites. But I am interested in reading more books about angels especially that one series...what is it called? My mind is drawing a blank. Angelfire? That doesn't sound right. The one with Raffe in it. This one sounds like a unique take on angels. I'll be adding it to my list. Great review!

    1. I think you're talking about Angelfall by Susan Ee. Definitely a great angel series. I would also recommend Shadows by Paula Weston and the Embrace series by Jessica Shirvington. All three of those are so good! And yes, this one is definitely unique with her take on the angels. I just finished the second one and it's even better than the first, which is unusual (I almost always like the first book in a series the most). Hope you enjoy! ~Pam

  3. It's nice to get a fresh take on the angel idea. I don't read a TON of angel stories or paranormal in general but this sounds like something Ashley might really enjoy. I'm glad you liked it! I hope the sequels are just as good!
