Mini-Reviews: Books Published Months Ago

Books I Wanted To Read Months Ago

So like many working moms, I find making time to read books and blog about them is a luxury I don’t get very often.  So for the last few weeks I have occasionally put down the cleaning supplies, refused to set up play dates, and let the children watch their favorite movies so I could catch up on some long overdue reading.

I began with Crown Of Midnight by Sarah Maas (published August 2013).  When I read the first book, Throne of Glass, I literally could not put it down.  I was on vacation with my family and all I heard was “mom, stop reading”.  I had a similar experience with Crown of Midnight but this time I heard “honey, go to bed and stop reading.” After three late nights I found myself excited for Caelena but heartbroken for Choal, Dorian, and Nehemia.  I also found myself asking, why must so many other people be harmed in order for the heroine to come into her own.  Is it really necessary for Caelena to be fierce and vengeful in order to regain her independence?  I will definitely be posting a discussion question on just this topic.  This was a fabulous second book in my opinion.  There was just the right amount of overlap with book one and new plot development that kept the story moving for me.  I was also thrilled the love triangle resolved itself pretty quickly.

The second book I read that I should have read months ago was Allegiant by Veronica Roth (published October 2013).  I know every blogger out there has already read this book and reviewed it so my only contribution is the following.  I think Tris made the choice that she did because she couldn’t stand the idea that Evelyn would be her mother-in-law.  Enough said! That woman was a cold heartless bitXX.  Despite not loving the third book I am still enamored with FOUR and the brand of masculinity he represents among young adult boyfriends.  Following the traditional model he is stoic, confident, and embraces violence in books one and two.  In this third book however he struggles more than Tris with the changes in their world and seems to crave stable emotional relationships with those around him.  I definitely agree with many others that this was not the book I was expecting to end the series but I enjoyed it none-the-less.

  1. I still haven't read Allegiant. In fact, I haven't read Insurgent. I have had too many review commitments to dig either of them off my TBR mountain. Come see what I got at Ms. Martin Teaches Media and Inside of a Dog. Happy reading!

    1. Have you heard all the news stories about J K Rowling in hindsight thinking a different outcome should have occurred for Harry and Hermione. It makes me wonder if Veronica Roth feels the same way. ~Sheri

  3. I haven't started the Divergent series at all-I really should get to that! I'm so glad to hear Crown of Midnight was a good read, it's on my end table ready for me to read. I loved Throne of Glass!

    1. Honestly, I would recommend that you only read Divergent and skip the other two. It was a great book. ~Sheri

  4. I really need to read Throne of Glass, I've heard lots of amazing things about that book. I didn't enjoy Allegiant, and I love Four and thought his perspective seemed all wrong in this, compared to books one and two. Great review :)
