Discussion Question: Do You Enjoy Binge Reading a Series or Do You Take Breaks?

I love binge reading series.  If all of the books are out, I will read one after the other. I don't have to wait if there's a cliffhanger ending…love that.  I can just pick up the next book and keep reading.  And since I have such a horrible book memory (ok, let's face it, I have a horrible memory about pretty much everything) reading an entire series in a couple of days means I actually remember the characters, what's happened, the details, absolutely everything.  I can lose myself in that world.  I recently binge read The Seven Realms, Daughter of Smoke and Bone (I had to reread the first one, of course), and an adult urban fantasy series, Fever.  So much fun!

Do you like to read all of the books in a series or do you have to read other books in-between?

  1. I prefer not to wait a year, like we have to for most series, but even if all the books are out I don't necessarily read them back to back. Something about the book being out and available to me, makes me more patient with wanting to read it. I guess I want what I can't have haha. But it really depends. Sometimes I binge read, sometimes I pace myself.

    1. If I don't particularly love the series I don't feel compelled to keep reading and I may need breaks. But I look at it like Netflix. If you're a binge tv watcher, you're probably more likely to be a binge series reader as well. And I have grown bleary-eyed watching tv shows, especially those where every single episode is like a season finale and you're like…just one more. Ten hours later…. :) ~Pam

  2. So I like binge reading series, but I don't do it very often because I'm not patient enough to wait for the entire series to come out. But I also have terrible book memory and it sucks because then I'm trying to figure out what the heck is going on in a book and I think a lot of times it makes me like a book less than I would have otherwise.

    1. I wish I could wait until entire series were out before I started reading them, but I can't do it either. I have found some older series though and I've had such a great time reading them all back to back. ~Pam

  3. I love binge reading! I hate ending a book in a cliffhanger and having to wait a year or more to find out what happens next. I read the Vampire Academy books all in a row and I've done that with some other series too. I missed your reviews for the last two books in the Seven Realms series...I'll have to go search for those if you posted them. I LOVE that series! Those last two books are so intense and it just got better and better.

    1. I read VA books in a row too and I loved it and then started Bloodlines. So much fun!

I actually didn't review the other Seven Realms books, but I agree with you, each book just got better and better. I didn't want to stop in between reading each book and write a review and then I couldn't remember what happened in what book to write reviews. Oh well! ~Pam

  4. I love binge reading series, but I also love reading series that are a little spaced out (like one or two other books between them). Because I have terrible book memory, binge reading and semi-binge reading really help me to not forget any really important parts.
And I also wait to semi-binge or binge read when I know that the last book in a series is coming out. Because then I don't have any waiting time between the second last and last book. It's great :D

    1. Yes, I've been trying to do that. For some reason, I remember the first book more than the second so if I can just wait to read the second until the third comes out, I'm pretty good at remembering what's going on. ~Pam

  5. I have horrible memory too. I usually forget the characters' names right after reading the book lol. For me, I don't binge read a series because no mater how much I like the book (or not), I like reading another book that is a different genre. Too much dystopian or whatever makes me bored which is why I don't read a book in a series back to back.

    1. When it gets longer than three books in a series, sometimes I'll read a book or two in between just to break things up. But yes, normally when I'm reading I try to mix it up as far as genres go because I get burned out reading the same type of books. ~Pam

  6. I LOVE binge reading a series! I haven't had the chance to do it often but it is so fun knowing that next book is available to dive right into. And then I fly through them! I did it with Vampire Academy and the Georgina Kincaid series recently.

  7. I LOVE TO BINGE! But, my memory is really sucky so I kind of have to binge too. Otherwise I will forget really important plot points, or characters and need to reread it all over again before getting to the sequel. Binging a series is my favourite way of doing it.

    1. I'm the same way. When the last book comes out in a series, I have to binge out of necessity because otherwise I won't remember a thing. ~Pam
