Sheri's Choices: If I were to introduce someone my age to young adult fiction I would give them the following books as a general introduction to the genre.
Anna and the French Kiss, for a light hearted romantic read.
Cinder, for an interesting take on a science fiction version of a classic fairy tale.
Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1), for an introduction to a series.
For Darkness Shows the Stars, for an example of a retelling of classic literature.
All Our Yesterdays, for an example of time-travel and suspense.
Pam's Picks: Here are three under appreciated series that I would give to YA readers (all Australian authors, for some reason):
1. Embrace series by Jessica Shirvington. This series has all the feels, interesting angel mythology, and a fantastic forbidden love story. I want everyone to read this series!!
2. The Rephaim series by Paula Weston. Another angel series that I absolutely love. Gaby and Rafa…gah!!!
3. Shadowfell series by Juliet Marillier. Quest oriented fantasy with a strong heroine and a slow-burning, subtle romance.
What books made your Top Ten list this week?
I haven't read any of the ones on your list, Pam! I know you rec'd the Embrace series to me a few days ago, but I didn't realize it was by Jessica Shirvington! Definitley going to move it up the list now since I loved that other book I read by her. I need to read more angel books.
ReplyDeleteAnd Sherri, those are great choices for ppl not into YA. The Infernal Devices is one of my favorite series ever!! And Cinder!!
Great list, ladies!
I have Embrace but haven't read it yet but I've heard such amazing things about it so I'll definitely be picking it up soon. Plus, I just read my first book by Shirvington (One Past Midnight) and I LOVED it! I totally agree that Anna would be a great choice for someone who has never read YA :)
ReplyDeleteIf I had to recommend YA to someone who'd never read YA... Well the list would be crazy long!
ReplyDeleteSeconds time I saw All Our Yesterdays. I am a sucker for time travel, so that sounds awesome! :) Adding it! Great list!
ReplyDeleteCinder is one of my favorite reads!
ReplyDeleteMissie @ A Flurry of Ponderings
I have the first three books in the Paul Weston series and can't wait to read them this month! I also love the inclusion of Anna, Cinder, and For Darkness Shows the Stars (that's definitely an underrated one, too). Great choices, ladies!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you would recommend the Rephaim series. I just won a copy of the third and final book from Goodreads, but hadn't read the first yet, now I definitely plan to get to them all.
ReplyDeleteSo I haven't read For Darkness Shows the Stars but I stand behind every one of Sheri's choices.
ReplyDeletePam, I haven't read any of these but I feel like I need to. Not just because you are awesome and take all my bookish recommendations but because I trust your opinion and am pretty sure I will enjoy them! What should I start with?
Ooh…that's hard to say. All of the Embrace books are out so maybe start with that one. I ordered two of the Rephaim books from Fishpond because they're not out in the US yet and same with the last book in the Shadowfell trilogy. I'm always nervous to recommend books…what if you don't like them??? ~Pam
