Book Review: Shadowlands by Kate Brian

Shadowlands (Shadowlands #1)
Author:  Kate Brian
Publisher:  Hyperion, 328 pages
Publication Date:  January 8, 2013

From Goodreads:
Rory Miller had one chance to fight back and she took it. Rory survived and the serial killer who attacked her escaped. Now that the infamous Steven Nell is on the loose, Rory must enter the witness protection program. Entering the program alongside her, is her father and sister Darcy. The trio starts a new life and a new beginning leaving their friends and family behind without a goodbye.

Starting over in a new town with only each other is unimaginable for Rory and Darcy. They were inseparable as children but now they can barely stand each other. As the sisters settle in to Juniper Landing, a picturesque vacation island, it seems like their new home may be just the fresh start they need. They fall in with a group of beautiful, carefree teens and spend their days surfing, partying on the beach, and hiking into endless sunsets. Just as they’re starting to feel safe again, one of their new friends goes missing. Is it a coincidence? Or is the nightmare beginning all over again?

Review:
Ok, so I thought this was going to be a normal thriller type YA about a girl who is being chased by a serial killer.  I was so wrong.  I don't know if I can really say much about this book without spoiling it, but let me just tell you, it was amazing. I'm reading it and I know something weird is going on because Juniper Landing is just not right. The people and the things that happen are just so strange. It's fast-paced and twisty and mind-bendy. I read a review where the person figured out the ending way early, but not me.  This was me:
I can't write anymore without giving away too much, so I'm continuing the discussion with questions, which will contain spoilers here.

    1. I agree. And the good thing about this book is that when you think about it later, there are clues throughout the book. I actually went back through it a little bit, thinking about it, and then I felt like...oh, that's why this happened or that happened. So it's not like the author keeps you completely in the dark and then just springs something merely for shock value. ~Pam
