Spoiler Discussion: Shadowlands by Kate Brian

This post is for anyone who has already read Shadowlands by Kate Brian and wants to discuss it.  SPOILER ALERT:  DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK.

Did anyone figure out the ending ahead of time?  Everyone's dead?  What??  I didn't, that's for sure.  I mean, I obviously knew this place was weird.  It made no sense that the FBI would send them to this island that had no phone service, no internet, etc.  Not the smartest move to make it impossible for the people getting chased by a serial killer to not be able to get in touch with the FBI.

So why was everyone so fascinated with Rory and not her sister?  Is it because they think she has the potential to be a lifer?  Which I'm assuming means she will stay on the island like they do and help people cross over.  Can they get hurt?  They mention that Darcy has blood on her shirt.  But then Rory went windsurfing and wasn't sore the next day.  After I finished the book, there were so many clues about what was going on.

So I'm assuming she died when they had that car accident and her dad was killed, then her sister, and then she killed Mr. Nell?  I was wondering why that was such a long scene given it was supposedly a dream.  Way to protect, FBI.

Will you read the next one?  I think this actually works as a stand-alone, but I'm still reading the next one.

  1. Pretty much agree with you on all points. I've read Hereafter, so let me know what you think when you get around to it. :)

    1. I had to read Hereafter right after this. I was pretty disappointed, but that happens a lot with the middle book of a trilogy. Do you think the bad person is really the person it appears to be at the end of the book? I'm thinking it's not, it just seemed too convenient, like that person was framed. I mean, the bag in the middle of the room like that? And the photo? Feel free to e-mail me if you would like to discuss! I'll be writing and posting a review soon. ~Pam

  2. hahah I was SO CONFUSED at the end of this book. These types of endings do not work for me (I need them straightforward). I actually needed help interpreting everything that was going on. BUT when someone did fill me in I was like OOOOOOHHHH that's pretty COOL/totally CREEPY! So yeah, she did die in that car accident and the island is like limbo where you work out any unresolved issues before you move on (that's why her father started getting better and her relationship with her sister too). The locals basically make sure everyone moves on and things run smoothly and what not. Apparently Rory has the potential to become a local because she's special. I assume that is what Hereafter will be about! I am definitely reading Hereafter, I actually traded for the ARC so i'm hoping to start reading it fairly soon. Definitely curious to see where this one goes!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one that was shocked by the ending. I read one review where the person guessed it early on, I guess because of that long scene where Mr. Nell kills her dad and her sister and then she kills him right before she dies. But it seemed so crazy that they would get in a car accident (unless maybe Mr. Nell was driving the truck) that I just thought it was just some really long nightmare. I just finished Hereafter so let me know what you think after you read it! ~Pam
