Book Review: Plus One by Elizabeth Fama

Plus One
Author:  Elizabeth Fama
Publisher:  Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 373 pages
Publication Date:  April 8, 2014

From Goodreads:
Divided by day and night and on the run from authorities, star-crossed young lovers unearth a sinister conspiracy in this compelling romantic thriller.

Seventeen-year-old Soleil Le Coeur is a Smudge—a night dweller prohibited by law from going out during the day. When she fakes an injury in order to get access to and kidnap her newborn niece—a day dweller, or Ray—she sets in motion a fast-paced adventure that will bring her into conflict with the powerful lawmakers who order her world, and draw her together with the boy she was destined to fall in love with, but who is also a Ray.

Review:
I found the premise of this novel to be so fascinating, with people living divided by day and night, but I just couldn't accept the reason.  A flu epidemic leads to the government dividing medical teams into day and night to deal with all of the patients.  Somehow that leads to the end of the epidemic (what???), but the government still keeps people divided and it's even a crime to be out when you're not supposed to be.  And of course the night people are marginalized in society.

And then the plot…completely revolves around Sol kidnapping her newborn niece.  It made no sense.

I did like Sol and D'Arcy's relationship and how it progressed from hate/dislike to respect and then love.  However, then there's this huge coincidence that was not believable at all.  And then…the ending.  What???  Are you kidding me?  I read this entire book and that's how the author ends it?  No. Way.

I really wanted to love this book, and despite all of my ranting, I did enjoy it, but it was definitely disappointing.

  1. Meh I am going to pass on this one. That reasoning is pretty flawed and I don't care for frustrating endings or coincidences. I don't think this is my cup of tea.

  2. So for awhile all I heard was amazing things about this one. But then I started hearing some more negative things many points the same as yours. I think I'm going to skip it. The synopsis didn't really grab my attention and if it was just meh for you, it probably will be for me too.

    1. I did love the idea of it, and it made me keep thinking about how that would make sense. Overpopulation would make sense and even have the people have to share homes but never be in them at the same time. But this…they actually had the opposite problem since the epidemic killed so many people. I just couldn't get past that. Maybe that's why do many dystopians don't explain how they live like they do because there is no reasonable explanation. ~Pam

  3. I requested the eARC after seeing so many incredible reviews, but as soon as I had the book all I was seeing was negative review after negative review. It's making me very nervous to even get to this one now. Thanks for the honest review, at least I know to keep my expectations low.

  4. Sorry this didn't work for you :(. I liked the premise, but I can see where it would be tough to read if it didn't work for you. I loved Sol and D'Arcy too.
